UN General Assembly: World Leaders Address Wars, Peace and Global Security
NEW YORK — World leaders and senior government officials have gathered in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with discussions focusing on armed conflicts, international security, peace, development and major global challenges.
Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who is also serving as the current Chairperson of the African Union, is among the leaders attending the high-level meeting. He addressed the General Assembly on September 23, 2026.
The conflict between the United States and Iran has been one of the major issues attracting international attention during the gathering. U.S.
President Donald Trump used his address to speak about the conflict and called for Iran to return to negotiations, while also warning that Washington could take further measures if an agreement is not reached.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also addressed the General Assembly. He rejected accusations that Iran supports terrorism and maintained that Iran’s nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes. His remarks came amid continuing tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The situation in Gaza and the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict is also among the major issues being discussed by world leaders. Humanitarian concerns, civilian protection and efforts to achieve a lasting political solution remain central to international discussions.
The war in Ukraine is another major topic at the General Assembly, alongside conflicts and security crises in other parts of the world.
African leaders are also using the UN platform to highlight the continent’s priorities, including peace and security, economic development, youth participation, women’s role in peacebuilding and stronger international cooperation.
The 81st UN General Assembly is taking place under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.” The discussions are expected to continue as leaders seek diplomatic approaches to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
