Bujumbura, August 25, 2026 — A major fire broke out at Kinindo Market, located in the Mugere area of southern Bujumbura, Burundi, on Tuesday morning.
According to initial reports, the fire started in the section of the market where mattresses were being sold before spreading to other parts of the market. Thick smoke could be seen rising from the market as traders rushed to rescue their belongings and goods.
Firefighters, police officers, soldiers and Red Cross personnel responded to the scene to help contain the blaze. Reports indicate that the fire started at around 10:00 a.m. and was brought under control at approximately 12:00 p.m.
Several traders reportedly lost merchandise and other property in the fire, while others managed to remove some of their belongings from areas that had not yet been affected.
Cause of the Fire
